The three terms get used loosely, so here are the working definitions.

Hot numbers are the ones drawn most often over some window. Cold numbers are the ones drawn least often over that same window. Overdue numbers are different — they ignore total frequency and look only at the gap since a number's last appearance. A number can be drawn often historically and still be overdue if it happens to be in a dry spell right now.

The window matters more than most sites admit. Powerball moved to a 5/69 white-ball pool with a 1/26 Powerball in October 2015, which gives 1,389 draws of comparable data. Mega Millions has used 1–70 white balls since October 2017 — 914 draws — but changed its Mega Ball pool from 25 to 24 in April 2025, so only 138 draws describe the current Mega Ball game. The spread here is 35 draws. Mega Ball counts are shakier still: only 138 draws have used the current 24-ball pool, so the expected count per Mega Ball is 5.8 and the leader, 12, sits at 12 appearances against a bottom of 2 for both 11 and 15. Mega Millions has a shorter leader: 8 at 42 draws since March 6, 2026, followed by 6 at 40 draws and 11 at 38.

Look at the right-hand column of the Powerball table before you go any further. The most overdue number, 23, has been drawn 116 times — 15.2% above expectation, and eighth on the hot list. So has 32, also at 116. Number 64 has 121 hits and is third-hottest. Number 33 has 115. Four of the ten most overdue Powerball numbers are simultaneously among the ten hottest.

That's not a contradiction in the data. It's the data telling you the two labels are measuring random fluctuation from different angles.

Balls don't have memory

The mechanism is the whole argument, so it's worth being concrete about it.

A Powerball draw uses a machine loaded with 69 numbered white balls. Five come out. Then every ball goes back in the hopper for the next draw. The machine is reset. There is no register anywhere in the system recording that 23 hasn't shown up since March 9 — not in the balls, not in the air mixer, not in the physics.

So on the next draw, 23's chance of being one of the five is 5/69 = 7.2%. Exactly the same as 27, which was drawn on August 1, 2026. Exactly the same as 13, the coldest number in the game. Every white ball has the same 7.2% on every draw, forever.

This is the gambler's fallacy: the belief that independent random events "balance out" in the short run, so a result that's behind is more likely to come. Independent events don't balance out. Over enough draws the proportions converge toward expectation, but that happens by dilution — the absolute gaps typically keep growing, they just get smaller relative to a growing total. The mirror-image belief is just as common: that hot numbers are "running" and will keep running. Same problem, opposite direction. A ball that has been drawn 123 times has a 7.2% chance next draw.

Doing the arithmetic on a 63-draw gap

"Sixty-three draws without appearing" sounds extreme, so let's compute how extreme it actually is.

A given number is drawn with probability 5/69 = 0.0725 per draw. So it is not drawn with probability 64/69 = 0.9275. Assuming draws are independent — they are — the chance of a specific number missing 63 consecutive draws is:

(64/69)^63 = 0.9275^63 = 0.00875, or 0.875%

That's about 1 in 114. Rare-ish for one nominated number. But you didn't nominate 23 in advance. You looked at all 69 numbers and picked out whichever one happened to have the longest gap. That's a different question, and it has a very different answer.

The chance that a specific number is not currently on a 63-plus drought is 1 − 0.00875 = 0.99125. Across 69 numbers:

0.99125^69 = 0.545

So there's a 45% chance that at least one Powerball number is sitting on a drought of 63 or more draws at any given moment. (Numbers within a draw aren't perfectly independent of each other — exactly five come out each time — but the approximation is close enough to make the point.) Roughly half the time you check, you'll find someone's "shocking overdue number." It's the default state of the game.

Run the same calculation over the full history and the effect is even starker. The expected number of 63-plus-draw droughts across 69 numbers over 1,389 draws works out to about 58. Droughts of 40 or more: roughly 333. Droughts of 50 or more: roughly 156. Long dry spells aren't anomalies in this system. They're the texture of it.

How long a typical gap runs

The average gap between appearances is 69 ÷ 5 = 13.8 draws, and the median gap is only about 9 draws. But the distribution has a long tail: gaps of 40 and 50 draws happen constantly, and one of 63 is comfortably inside the range you'd expect to see across 69 numbers watched over four-plus years of drawings.

Mega Millions works out almost identically. With five drawn from 70, the per-draw chance is 5/70 = 7.14%, so a 42-draw gap has probability (65/70)^42 = 4.45% — you'd expect about 3.1 of the 70 numbers to be on a 42-plus drought at any time. So the current leader isn't even unusual — typically about three numbers are sitting that deep.

The multiple-comparisons trap

If you check one number for one unusual property, an unusual result is meaningful. If you check 69 numbers for whichever property turns out most unusual, you will always find something. The extreme value of a large sample is extreme — that's what "extreme value" means. It carries no information about causes.

Apply it to the frequency table. The expected count per number is 100.7 across 1,389 draws, and the standard deviation of that count is:

√(1,389 × 0.0725 × 0.9275) = √93.4 = 9.66

So 61 and 21 at 123 are (123 − 100.7) ÷ 9.66 = 2.31 standard deviations above expectation. The coldest, 13 at 75, is (75 − 100.7) ÷ 9.66 = 2.66 standard deviations below. When you draw 69 values from a random distribution, the most extreme one typically lands somewhere around 2.2 standard deviations out. Observed: 2.31 and 2.66. The "48-draw spread" between the hottest and coldest Powerball numbers is precisely the amount of spread a fair machine produces.

Mega Millions is the same story. The standard deviation there is √(914 × 0.0714 × 0.9286) = 7.79, putting 10 at 85 hits 2.53 standard deviations high and 51 at 50 hits 1.97 low.

There's nothing to explain. A biased ball, a weighted machine, a mechanical quirk — none of these are needed, because a perfectly fair process already produces exactly this picture.

So is any of it useful?

Yes, in one narrow and honest way: hot and cold data is a perfectly good way to choose numbers when you'd otherwise be paralysed by choice.

Every combination of 5 from 69 plus a Powerball has the same 1 in 292,201,338 chance, so playing the ten hottest numbers is as good as playing birthdays, which is as good as picking the ten most overdue, which is as good as whatever the clerk's terminal spits out. If frequency tables make an arbitrary choice feel less arbitrary, that costs you nothing.

What actually holds up

Since the honest answer to "do hot and cold numbers work?" is no, here's what genuinely survives scrutiny.

Strategy can't change your odds. It can change your share. Jackpots get split among all winning tickets. Numbers 1–31 are heavily over-played because people use birthdays, and only 44.9% of Powerball's 69-ball pool falls in that range.
